We compiled a few of our favorite ways to get outdoors and stay adventurous in the winter weather. Being Coloradans the winter weather doesn’t keep many of us indoors so we challenge you to try something new! Here are some ideas…
1. Skiing (duh!)
Let’s take it up a notch and venture off the blues and blacks, shall we? Check out this link for a list of the country’s best extreme terrain, as well as expert tips and suggestions for the ultimate ways to shred that backcountry snow.
Have you ever wanted to ski or ride up a hill instead of down? Have you wanted to try something new on your skis or board? Well, let’s harness a kite to you and have the wind pull you across a frozen lake or icy meadow on your skis or board. Stay tuned for Vela Adventure’s upcoming January/February outings because this will definitely be on our list!
3. Backcountry Snowshoe
Dust off those snowshoes and use them as a transportation method this winter. Throughout Colorado’s backcountry there are secluded huts snuggled among the mountains. Getting to these huts is the biggest and best part of the adventure – here’s where your snowshoes come in! Check out 5280 Magazine’s list of
Colorado’s rustic retreats where snowshoes and cross country skis are necessities. http://www.5280.com/backcountry
4. Ice Climbing
Located in Ouray, Colorado…deep in Southwestern Colorado… is an ice park where you can get expert instruction on using an ice axe and climbing vertical walls of sheer ice. After learning how to climb walls of ice, relax in the park’s natural hot springs. Learn more about Ouray’s ice park here http://ourayicepark.com/.
5. Dog Sledding
Bundle up in your warmest winter wear and learn how to lead a dogsled pulled by a team of beautiful Siberian Huskies. Imagine speeding through snowy trails and winding winter paths in Colorado’s back country. An adventure you, your friends and/or your family will never forget. Vela Adventures will be adding this one to our upcoming outings as well. We can’t wait!
*Please let us know all about your winter adventures. We love hearing about how our Vela girls stay active and adventurous in Colorado’s winter playground.
Many of you would agree that the holiday season offers a variety of “adventures” to challenge our busy lives. The problem I have found is that the season’s “adventure” usually involves the juggling act of scheduling a year’s worth of events and tasks in a four-week period. And, no matter how much I organize or plan ahead, I am always running around like a crazed person all of December.
So, just as the holiday season creeps up on us, we were so excited to get going with our November/December Vela Adventures outings. Excited, but challenged at the same time because it’s the time of year where we women have even less time for ourselves. Convincing YOU to take time to experience a TRUE adventure outside of the hustle and bustle and stress of this time of year is quite a daunting task. However, our outing today was all the more rewarding for this reason.
Fencing & Fine Art was one of the outings we were most excited about and it didn’t disappoint – what an exciting and unforgettable day. It was such a thrill to learn the art of fencing, swing around a sword and then compete in a real duel where electronic bells would ring if you landed a shot. Empowering, challenging, exciting and memorable…now, that’s a TRUE adventure.
After sweating through an unexpected cardio workout, a.k.a fencing, we sat down to paint. It was a lift to our hearts to listen to our customers talk about how much fun they had, how they never would have dreamt of trying fencing and how proud they were that they did it. What a poignant conversation piece they were going to have to talk about at dinner and over the holidays.
We, at Vela, often talk about our love of seeing that glow of pride and accomplishment from our Vela customers, and we definitely saw that today. What’s more, during this time of year giving women a day that’s all theirs makes our job all the better. So, we encourage you to find some true adventure just for
you this holiday season. It may be a cold-weather hike, a language lesson, a dance class, a cooking class…anything that empowers, challenges and excites you is the true value of adventure.
Last week was a big week for Vela Adventures. We threw a “we’re really doing it” launch party, invited everyone we knew and celebrated our new venture with family and friends, new and old. The feeling of taking an idea that was founded over a good glass of wine with a dear friend and, four months later, throwing a party to officially announce that our idea has taken root and grown – it’s literally indescribable.
So, as we revel in the possibility that lies before us we can’t help but think about all of the unique and incredible ideas that are currently living in the minds of people. Ideas that could really impact someone’s life, in small ways and enormous ones. Ideas that may not be ready to be shared by their owners due to
lack of support, lack of resources or of fear.
And, we totally get that. There is a lot to be scared of when you have this idea that you’ve nurtured and loved and kept hidden…and then it’s released. There’s the “what ifs” and the “buts” of course, but there’s also the “no’s” and the “whys” and the “no ways.” When we started to go ‘live’ with the idea of Vela we faced those same obstacles. We even had one insurance agent ask “do these people really know what they are doing?”
However, even with all the naysayers and the obstacles that may stand in your way there’s an even bigger network of supporters. Be it non-profit organizations like SCORE or government agencies like the SBA, there’s loads of professional resources out there to help you make your idea a reality. And, what surprised us most, were the businesses and friends who have become our biggest advocates. So much support and assistance has truly surprised and enlivened us.
If you are out there with an idea fluttering around in your mind we challenge you to release it! We want you to know that there’s so much support to help you make your dream a reality that, if you take the chance and trust yourself, there will be more people than you know cheering you on. Including Vela Adventures!
Vela is all about fun and adventure!
