Adventure, Fun and Enjoyment. What do they mean to you? How much space do you consciously create for them in your life? The answer is subjective, but important to each of us. Often times, I speak with clients who enjoy their lives; but realize they aren’t necessarily having as much fun as they would like.
They say they are looking for more balance. They wish they had more time and energy. They feel that
they have lost touch with their sense of adventure. It all makes sense. In our society, hard work and productivity are rewarded over fun and enjoyment. But, one without the other can leave us feeling detached, indifferent and numb. A union of the two brings vitality to everything: the way we live each day, the projects we engage in, and our relationships.
For many years, I lost touch with consciously creating fun and adventure in my life. Things were neither good nor bad. They just were.
I felt disconnected, restless, bored and annoyed with the nagging thought that there was something missing from my life. I would have persistent thoughts of hiking more daring terrain, skiing alone under any conditions, ballroom dancing, free diving, and moving to a remote island where I had to forage for my dinner each night.
After the initial thrill of considering each of these, I’d eventually rack up a list of rational excuses as to why I didn’t have the time or money to pursue them. I ignored these crazy ideas and stuck to what was practical and familiar.
As my life changed dramatically through the years of my divorce and transition to a new city, I began to realize how off-balance I had become in terms of thinking about my life vs. actually living it in a way that excited me.
