We compiled a few of our favorite ways to get outdoors and stay adventurous in the winter weather. Being Coloradans the winter weather doesn’t keep many of us indoors so we challenge you to try something new! Here are some ideas…
1. Skiing (duh!)
Let’s take it up a notch and venture off the blues and blacks, shall we? Check out this link for a list of the country’s best extreme terrain, as well as expert tips and suggestions for the ultimate ways to shred that backcountry snow.
Have you ever wanted to ski or ride up a hill instead of down? Have you wanted to try something new on your skis or board? Well, let’s harness a kite to you and have the wind pull you across a frozen lake or icy meadow on your skis or board. Stay tuned for Vela Adventure’s upcoming January/February outings because this will definitely be on our list!
3. Backcountry Snowshoe
Dust off those snowshoes and use them as a transportation method this winter. Throughout Colorado’s backcountry there are secluded huts snuggled among the mountains. Getting to these huts is the biggest and best part of the adventure – here’s where your snowshoes come in! Check out 5280 Magazine’s list of
Colorado’s rustic retreats where snowshoes and cross country skis are necessities. http://www.5280.com/backcountry
4. Ice Climbing
Located in Ouray, Colorado…deep in Southwestern Colorado… is an ice park where you can get expert instruction on using an ice axe and climbing vertical walls of sheer ice. After learning how to climb walls of ice, relax in the park’s natural hot springs. Learn more about Ouray’s ice park here http://ourayicepark.com/.
5. Dog Sledding
Bundle up in your warmest winter wear and learn how to lead a dogsled pulled by a team of beautiful Siberian Huskies. Imagine speeding through snowy trails and winding winter paths in Colorado’s back country. An adventure you, your friends and/or your family will never forget. Vela Adventures will be adding this one to our upcoming outings as well. We can’t wait!
*Please let us know all about your winter adventures. We love hearing about how our Vela girls stay active and adventurous in Colorado’s winter playground.
Vela is all about fun and adventure!
