It’s so easy, when we are busy, to look at maintaining friendships as a trial or chore rather than a joy. Trust us, we get how difficult it can be to find the time to keep in touch with old friends, much less make time to
connect with new friends. However, there are a number of reasons why it’s important to continue making new friends throughout your life – hey, it’s even good for your health.
We, at Vela Adventures, have been lucky to watch the birth of new friendships. So many times women join an outing, be it zip lining or rock climbing or archery, and leave with a new friendship or two. We even hear about
women getting together for a glass of wine or dinner after meeting on one of our outings. We love that! So, to encourage you to keep making new friends we have seven reasons why you should make a new friend today.
1. New Influences and Interests
Never tried Standup Paddleboard but your new friend LOVES it and convinces you to join her. And, guess what?!? You love it, too. That can be said about so many hobbies and interests in one’s life. Many times, we don’t even know half the things that are out there to try or do until we meet a friend who has done them. My first time trying Indian food and my first time doing Pilates was all because of a friend in my life who shared their love with me. In fact, these women were friends from years ago but I still love Indian food and I still love Pilates and owe my love of these things to them.
2. Find Something New in Common
There’s nothing quite like making a fast friend over a common interest. You love art and have been wanting to get to the Denver Art Museum to explore that new exhibit and the terrific woman you met at your new book club loves art, too. You now have a date to the art exhibit with coffee after to discuss the pieces you loved. Someone who shares your love for something can be very supportive and enlightening. It can even spark a passion in you for something that you only had a passing interest in.
3. It’s Good for Your Health
We all know being happy is good for you. And, that extraordinary feeling of meeting someone new who makes you laugh or makes you feel good about yourself can be a key factor in helping you find happiness during your day. Making a new friend can bring loads of happy moments into your life and make you healthier while adding lasting longevity to your life.
4. Expand Your Circle of Connectedness
It’s been said that we all need different categories of friends to meet our emotional and social needs. There are casual friends that we form a connection with from school or the gym or church, and then there are those deep friendships we have had for years. In between our casual and deep friendships, there are different categories of friends. All are important and all play a role in your daily life. Making a new friend who can fit into one of these categories can expand and strengthen your circle of connectedness, and feed those essential emotional and social needs.
5. Improve Your Communication Skills
Making a new friend can be difficult for many people. In fact, there are tons of books out there to help women with the sometimes daunting task of meeting new friends. Kind of like dating, meeting new people requires a good set of communication skills to help navigate through the initial pre-friend introductory period. However, the more you put yourself in situations where you are meeting new people, the more you are honing essential communication skills that can assist you in many of life's situations.
6. Life Is Short
“You only live once.” “Life is short.” “Live like there is no tomorrow.” All of these mantras embrace the attitude to simply enjoy life’s little moments. By that same token, you never know what a new friend can bring to your life. Be it a laugh or a lasting memory or a shoulder to cry on, a new friend in your life could just be what you need to let loose and enjoy those silly and special moments.
7. Spread the Wealth
You are special. You are unique. You have gifts to give. Sharing them with others only makes their lives brighter and happier, and makes the lives around those people brighter and happier. By focusing on a new friendship, you are spreading your worth and making someone else’s life richer. You never know the influence you can have on a new friend’s life. And, knowing that you have the power to make someone happier and healthier by just being you is all the reason to make a new friend today!
