There’s something magical about experiencing summer as a child. When I close my eyes I can see that little girl with freckles, a messy ponytail, skinned knees and dirty feet running through the sprinkler on a hot day. I see that little girl catching fireflies in pickle jars at grandma’s house. I see her playing flashlight tag with her cousins and learning to skip stones at the lake with grandpa. I have so many sweet, sweet memories of my childhood summers. How many of you would love to be able to embrace summer and really experience the season with the magic and joy of a child? I sure would! So, here are five ways to help you really love and live summer like a kid again.
Water guns, water balloons, water parks, water slides, pools, fishing, tubing, swimming…water simply means summer. And, we can easily dive into summer just like a child by finding a way to play in the water. Rent a tube and drift down a lazy, Colorado river. Grab your girlfriends and hang out at a private cabana at Water World (no kids allowedJ). Start a water balloon or water gun fight with unsuspecting family members or set up camp near a lake and spend the evening skipping stones. Playing in and with water is a very easy way to embrace summer with the love and spirit of a child.
Remember those awesome bikes with the banana seats and the streamers on the handlebars? I loved those bikes because the seat was big enough for my best friend to ride on the back as we cruised through the neighborhood. While we may be too big to get our BFF on the back of our bike, we can still pedal to grab coffee or hit the local farmer’s market or even to eat downtown. There’s nothing more special than taking a lazy, evening bike ride after a delicious meal on the patio. Using two wheels as your summer mode of transportation can easily make you feel like a kid again.
Oh that thrill and anticipation of a good roller coaster is like no other! Waiting so excited in line, hearing the click-click as the roller coaster car slowly makes its way up the hill and that feeling in your stomach as you plummet down the other side. The squealing, screaming, giggling, eyes-shut-tight happiness of a roller coaster can really make you appreciate summer like only a child could. Find the closest amusement park and plan your day of roller coaster hopping…and, don’t forget the funnel cakes!
There’s no better way to cool off on a hot summer day than by licking a creamy ice cream cone. Taking advantage of the delicious and eclectic ice cream options along the Front Range is the perfect way to channel your inner child this summer. Make it your mission to try every ice cream parlor in your metro area, or initiate an after-dinner race to the ice cream truck. Keep a load of popsicles for chilling on the back patio or order a root beer float at lunch with a friend. Trust me, becoming a true ice cream aficionado will make summer so wonderfully delicious.
We are lucky to live in a state with such a plentiful and diverse range of parks. As kids, we ran as fast as our little legs would carry us to our neighborhood park. Sure, the swings and slides kept us entertained but just being in the openness of a park to roll down a hill or play Frisbee was a great way to enjoy summer. As an adult a summer day at the park can mean the exact same thing. Explore one of the state’s beautiful parks by hiking or biking. Pack a picnic, lay out a blanket and spend the majority of your Sunday afternoon gazing at the cloud animals. Play Frisbee, kick a soccer ball with your kids, sit on the swings – hey, go ahead and try the slide. Enjoying a lazy summer afternoon at a park is a sure-fire way to add to the season’s magic and joy.
